San Geronimo Valley Workshops

Salmonid Enhancement Community Workshop

Saturday, July 24th from 8:30am - 12:30pm
San Geronimo Golf Club

Agenda will include representatives from the Regional Water Quality Control Board, Marin Environmental Health Services (CDA), Marin Department of Public Works Stormwater Program, California Fish and Game, and others. Watch this site for more details.

Workshop Purpose

These workshops will provide opportunities to contribute ideas, learn what others have done, and discuss strategies to protect salmonid habitat in the San Geronimo Valley. It is hoped that they will yield an expanded menu of options, both voluntary and regulatory, that in combination produce the best benefits for the least amount of impact and expense to the landowners and responsible government entities. The focus will be on incentives and assistance rather than regulations and enforcement whenever possible. Much of the work to explore options will be community led.

The results will be incorporated into future work plans for the county, sister agencies, private organizations, and landowners. At least one ordinance is expected to go forward - one that strives to protect riparian vegetation along anadromous stream in the Valley. This, and any other ordinances, will be subject to public hearings with both the Marin County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors.

Inherent in this approach is a need to monitor progress toward salmonid recovery. A subsequent process will develop a monitoring plan that establishes both indicators and standards that are feasible and scientifically sound.

What the workshop will not do

Debate the existing laws and policies.
Blame landowners, agencies, or private organizations.

Guiding Principles for the Workshops (Ground Rules)

All who participate, including the county, agree to:
  • show respect to all who participate
  • listen to and hear all ideas with an open mind
  • separate individuals and/or organizations from the problems
  • focus on interests rather than positions
  • move forward - learn from the past, but do not sacrifice future progress to it
  • work toward desired outcomes with integrity
