Bargain Hunters, take note: the ninth Annual Book Super
Sale will take place the weekend of March 28/29 at the National Guard Armory in
San Rafael (Armory Drive across from the Civic Center). The sale is FREE to the
public both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a special Members' Preview Saturday 8-10
a.m. kicks off the event. (Memberships are available at the door for $25.00.)
The sale, sponsored by
the Friends
of the Marin County Free Library,
will again feature nearly 30,000 books in 35 popular categories. Over half
of the books you'll see at the sale were never offered for sale at our store
in Novato. We had so many donations that we immediately boxed and stored
for this sale. This could mean some real finds for shoppers.
Along with the traditional used books, a Better Books/collectibles section will
again offer books, magazines, sheet music, and a small selection of comic books.
A Silent Auction on Saturday morning is a highlight for collectors. With prices
starting at 75¢ for a small-size paperback, and hardback books at $2.00-3.00,
it's a great time to stock up or find a gift while supporting the library. Better
Books and collectibles are individually-priced. Pricing is reduced further on
Sunday, and a Bag Sale wraps up the event Sunday afternoon.
Proceeds will benefit the Marin County Free Library, with a portion of
the funds earmarked for Teen programs.
Directions: From Highway 101, take the North San Pedro Road Exit; turn
left onto Civic Center Drive; turn right onto Armory Drive and continue
to the far east end of the lot.
The good news this month is that library
use is growing fast ! Compared to last year we have 13% more people
coming through our doors and they are checking out more than 8% more books,
DVDs and audio books than they did last year. Public computer use is up
8% and attendance at children's story times is up a whopping 24%.
The less happy news is that at the
same time people are depending more and more on us, our revenue is shrinking
as tax growth drops.
We are doing some belt tightening this
year and plan to do more of that next year. Our staff and our collection are
the heart of our library and we are developing some long
term strategies for getting the most out of our funding in these areas while
maintaining the excellent service our patrons have come to expect and which
we want to deliver.
Serving our patrons well is our most important goal. Your
concerns and comments mean a lot to us. If we are not meeting your needs,
please let us know how we could do better. If we are doing our job well, we
would like to hear that also.
