What's New On the Library Website

The Marin County Free Library now offers Rosetta Stone Language Learning!
Discover a new way to English, French, Italian, Latin American Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese that's easier than you could you imagine and works without translation, memorization, or grammar drills.

Language Learning
This very popular online learning system can cost hundreds of dollars for individual users, but as part of our extensive collection of eResources, we're able to offer the program FREE to patrons within the Marin County Free Library tax jurisdiction that have a valid, current library card.

This innovative learning system involves a dynamic immersion method that combines listening, viewing images, and reading text through an interactive software application. With credit for correct answers and bleeps for wrong answers, it is easy to stay focused and learn fast!

New to the Civic Center Library

The library has begun a subscription to a set of consumer guides published by TheStreet.com Ratings (formerly Weiss Ratings) that cover eight subject areas:
  • Automobile Insurance
  • Elder Care Choices
  • Homeowners Insurance
  • Long-Term Care Insurance
  • Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance
  • Term Life Insurance
  • Variable Annuities
Each consumer guide describes the product or service, outlines factors to consider when making a selection, and includes independent unbiased ratings of companies in the field.

TheStreet.com Ratings: Consumer Guide box set is updated quarterly. The guides are shelved as a box set on the library's Consumer Shelves and are available for in-library use.

The Latest Literacy Publication

The Marin Literacy Program's Community Report for Spring '07 has just been published. This report provides a brief review of the Marin Literacy Program's involvement with and impact on the community. The Marin Literacy Program provides Marin County adults with free student-centered instruction in reading, writing and speaking to help them reach their full potential at work, at home and in the community. You can view a copy of full report on their website or call the Literacy Program Office at 415-485-3318 for further information.

Punta de Quintin Rancho California Room Digital Archive Interactive Maps

The California Room Digital Archive is proud to host an interactive map of the County's original ranchos, created by volunteer Leila Joslyn. The map includes basic information on each rancho granted by Mexico between 1834 and 1846 and offers expanded links to more detailed information.

Keep an eye online as Digital Archive continues to develop: http://www.co.marin.ca.us/library/crm/kentmain.html

Kids Corner: Teen Summer Reading Program

Everyone from 6th to 12th grade is welcome to read books, write reviews and play a weekly trivia contest. Each review and contest entry wins a ticket in weekly drawings for excellent prizes, and a ticket for the grand prize, which is an I-Pod Shuffle. Even teens who are out of town may participate online. Teens who register for Summer Reading may also be invited to programs and parties, which vary by branch library.

For details, visit our Teen Summer Reading Program link.

THANK YOU to the Friends of the Marin County Free Library and Marin Charitable Association for helping us fund the Teen Summer Reading Program.

Mark your calendars and check your reading lists-The Book Place is having a Summer Blowout Sale! Our shelves are bursting, thanks to donations, and we need to clear out to make room. Our sale will feature 50% off our already-low prices throughout the store, including the "better," or higher-priced books. The sale happens on the weekend of July 20-22, with special preview hours on Thursday night, 6-9 pm for Friends of the Library members. Sale hours are Friday, 10-7; Saturday, 10-6, and Sunday, noon-4. Post-sale sales to charities and dealers will happen after 5 on Sunday. Stock up on your summer reading and support the library!

We've set aside books appearing on Marin County School Summer Reading lists-if your son/daughter has a few books to get through this summer, check out our Summer Reading Cart-we may not have them all, but we'll keep stocking what we do find in our inventory. We also gathered the lists for various schools to help you remember the titles. Save some money on these required reading editions; come see us!!

Hardcover Mysteries are on sale ALL SUMMER LONG. How does $1.00 sound for a deal? While they last, mysteries are on sale-kick back with a stack of whodunits.

The Book Place is run by the knowledgeable volunteers of the Friends of the Marin County Free Library. Volunteers always needed-check with us on available sales/sorting opportunities.
