Each week, families in the Raising A Reader program look forward to taking
home book bags filled with high quality children’s literature. This countywide
program works through child care providers to increase the number of low-income
families that lap-read with their infant/toddler, thus building pre-literacy
skills crucial to early development.
Many of the parents expressed anxiety about reading with their children due
to a lack of basic vocabulary skills since English is not their first language.
To address this concern, a biweekly adult ESL pilot class was created by the
Marin Literacy Program and Parent Services Project, offering families with young
children an opportunity to develop basic reading and writing skills so they
would have the confidence to read stories with their children on a regular basis.
In the first year, the project has been an overwhelming success.
You can make a difference! Donate time, knowledge or funding. To learn
more about Marin Literacy Program and its many projects, call 485-3318, or visit
us at http://www.marinliteracy.org.
