Library.
Where: National Guard Armory (on Armory Drive, near the Civic Center),
San Rafael
View of Union Square, San Francisco, April 18,
1906. Number 34 in a series, by W.J. Street.
Visit the California
Room Digital Archive to learn about the effects of the 1906 San
Francisco Earthquake and Fire. Our virtual photograph albums show
the devastation wrought by the quake in both San Francisco and Marin
County.
The Marin
album features West Marin, particularly the township of Tomales that
sustained serious damage to homes and businesses, including its church
and jail.
The San
Francisco album, a series of photographs by W.J. Street, is a chilling documentary
of a city on fire, reduced to ruins and rubble, its citizens in refugee camps
or wandering the streets.
Oral
history excerpts, including audio versions, further bring to life the
experiences of those who were affected by the quake. Tina Pastori tells how
her family welcomed eighty refugees from San Francisco to Pastori's Restaurant
& Resort in Fairfax; Warren Landon describes structural damage done to
the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo; James Leach recalls
how he fled his family's home on Dolores Street in San Francisco for a camp
in Marin County.
Being illiterate for fifty years, I remember one time I was in a parking
lot and hit a parked car and sat there for about forty minutes, waiting
for the owner so I could tell her I hit the car. That was one incident
in my life I had to wait because I could not spell to leave a note.
I wonder how much time I lost in fifty years for being illiterate.
You try to open so many doors and find a blank wall. Now I feel real
good. I have studied with my tutor for a few years. It's been a pleasure.
It feels good to open many doors and see all the light and opportunities.
I have so much time to make up. I wish I had all that lost time back.
Waiting until the last minute to file your taxes? It's not too late....through
mid-April, the Marin County Free Library is hosting AARP Tax-Aide volunteers,
eager to provide free tax preparation and assistance for low to middle-income
individuals with special attention to those ages 60 and older. For your convenience,
we've compiled a schedule
of Tax-Aide Help around the county. Ask your local librarian for further
information.
In addition to local volunteers, the Library has a wide variety of resources
to help you through the filing process, including eBooks and print materials
available for check out, and selection of printed tax forms for distribution.
Many of the forms and publications are now available online. Here are a few
