What's New On the Library Website

Check out our Virtual Reference Library collection! The Virtual Reference Library offers online access to five popular reference titles:
  • Arts and Humanities Through the Eras--great for finding out what life was like in ancient cultures
  • Dictionary of American History--American history resources for students and history buffs alike
  • Gale Encyclopedia of Science--Detailed information about all branches of the sciences
  • Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia--Profiles and photographs of hundreds of animals
  • West's Encyclopedia of American Law--American law defined and described for the layperson
These eBooks are accessible in all the public libraries in Marin, as well as from home with a library card number and PIN. For more information about the databases and eBooks offered for home access by the library, see our Databases and eBooks page.

Due Date Reminders....via email!

The MARINet libraries are pleased to announce a new email notification service, beginning mid-January, that will alert library patrons 2 days before an item is due. This is an email-only service, available to all patrons who have a valid email account listed in their record. Those who receive notices via US mail, as well as those have specifically chosen NOT to get notices via email, will not receive due date reminders.

Each reminder message will include a link allowing recipients to log into their account and renew materials online (except those items which are not eligible for renewal). If you check your email regularly you'll have time to return or renew items before late fees have a chance to accrue.

Since your eConnect subscription is unrelated to your patron account, you may wish to verify we have the correct email address on file before the notification process begins. To access your account and verify your email address, log into My MARINet (linked from the Library Catalog homepage).

  1. Type in your last name and then press the Tab key.
  2. Type in your Library card barcode that begins 2111100. Type the number completely with NO spaces between the numbers and then press the Tab key again.
  3. Type in your PIN number. (More About PINs)
  4. Click on the Submit button.
  5. Once your record appears, click on the button to Modify Personal Info.
  6. Add or edit your email address and click Submit.
If you’d like more information about due date reminders or turning off this personal feature, renewing materials or placing holds online we have a number of FAQs available. You can also visit any of our 11 Marin County Free Library branches. Our librarians would be happy to offer you assistance!

Marin County's Original Ranchos on the California Room Digital Archive

When California was under Mexican rule, land grants were made to the early settlers in the State, who were known as Californios. Some of these Californios discovered today's Marin County, just across the bay from San Francisco, and petitioned the Mexican government for land grants in the area, attracted by the abundant natural resources.

To explore this early chapter of our County's history, visit the interactive Marin County Rancho map on the California Room Digital Archive. Click on the various ranchos in the map then, in the box above, click on the link for more information about the original grantees and the rancho itself.

Our new biographies were written by intern, Eric Ward, and have been edited by the California Room staff. The map was graciously drawn for us by local artist, Leila Joslyn.

Temporary Closure of the Corte Madera Library

The Corte Madera Library will close for re-carpeting from January 20 to February 6, 2006. The bookdrop will also be closed during this time and items from the collection will be unavailable for loan. Due dates have been extended until after February 6th for items from the Corte Madera collection. Materials owned by other libraries must be returned according to the normal due date. Materials may be returned to any public library in Marin, except the Corte Madera branch during the temporary closure.

To accommodate for the closure, the Marin City Library, at 164 Donahue Street, will extend open hours as follows:

  • Monday through Thursday: 10am-9pm
  • Saturday: 10am-5pm
  • Sunday: noon-5pm
  • Friday: closed

Everyone is invited to visit the Corte Madera Library after February 6th to see this much-needed improvement!

Being Sensitive Towards Literacy Issues

Demonstrating sensitivity to literacy issues involves more than being aware and considerate of those with low literacy skills.

Someone with poor reading and writing skills may avoid reading and writing tasks by:

  • writing illegibly
  • not volunteering for any activities involving reading and writing
  • offering excuses for not completing forms or written tasks
When having to rely on written information they may:
  • have difficulty doing things based on written directions
  • ask to have information repeated verbally
  • watch what other people do before starting a task
  • speak up often, but be unable to follow up with written documentation when requested
The Marin Literacy Program offers a 1.5 hour orientation that explains more about the need for adult literacy instruction in Marin, the programs offered, what it is like to tutor an adult, and how you can make a difference in someone's life by volunteering as a literacy tutor. For further information please call 485-3318.

Kid's Corner: Best of 2005

This past year the library acquired over 2,000 new children's book titles! Silly stories, fulfilling fiction, and stunning science - our children's librarians work year round selecting items to ensure there's always something new and interesting on the shelf. Looking back on 2005, here are just a few of our most popular additions:

book cover Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins
Teenagers in a small town in the 1960s experience new thoughts and feelings, question their identities, connect, and disconnect as they search for the meaning of life and love (ages 10-14).
book cover Traction Man is Here! by Mini Grey
Traction Man, a boy's courageous action figure, has a variety of adventures with Scrubbing Brush and other objects in the house (ages 4-7).
book cover Oh, No! Where Are My Pants? by Lee Bennett Hopkins (ed.)
A collection of poems describing childhood situations and emotions, ranging from funny, sad, and embarrassing, to plain ole' bad days (ages 5-9).
book cover Looking for Alaska by John Green
Sixteen-year-old Miles' first year at Culver Creek Preparatory School in Alabama includes good friends and great pranks, but is defined by the search for answers about life and death after a fatal car crash (ages 14 and up).
book cover Shhhhh! Everybody's Sleeping by Julie Markes
In this lifting bedtime rhyme, a young child is encouraged to go to sleep by the thought of everyone else sleeping, from teacher to baker (ages 3-5).
