William Murray Vanderbilt III (1914-1998)

William Murray Vanderbilt III Born in San Rafael in 1914, William Vanderbilt is a descendent of a family that has lived in Marin County since 1857. He worked for the Del Monte Corporation and served as director of the Marin County Historical Society. His grandfather, William Vanderbilt, a resident of Tomales, was a public servant for 20 years serving in such capacities as assessor, sheriff and judge. William’s father, Major Newel Vanderbilt, was an army commandant and President of the Mount Tamalpais Military Academy until its closure in 1925. Newel was also a famous flower breeder and a founder of the Marin County Historical Society.
