William James Miller III (1909-1996)
Interview date: March 6, 1976
William James Miller III William is the great grandson of James Miller who led the Miller-Murphy Party across the Sierra section of the California Trail, which would later become the main route for the Gold Rush of 1849. The Millers settled on part of Don Timoteo Murphy's Rancho Las Gallinas, a 680-acre parcel of land. James Miller later constructed Miller Hall, a showplace of its day, while William’s father built the Nicasio Hotel. William remembers his family and life in Bolinas, the Bourne Ranch and the Louis Petar family.
