Virginia's legacy in Marin County stems from her role as the librarian of the Civic Center branch. After graduating from Stanford University, Virginia worked as a counselor at Marin County's Juvenile Hall, a position she left in favor of earning a degree in Library Science and assuming her role at the Marin County Free Library. Shortly before her retirement in 1978, she successfully petitioned the Board of Supervisors to pass legislation ensuring the perpetuity of the Anne T. Kent California Room. In her interview, she discusses her career as a librarian and the founding of the California Room under the supervision of Virginia Keating. Virginia Borland's love of nature inspired her to found the Tamalpais Trail Riders, an organization for the community's outdoor enthusiasts; some of the interview's conversation recalls this venture.
