Karl Untermann (1912-1999)

Karl is the owner of the award-winning West End Nursery in San Rafael. Karl tells the story of the business that was started by his uncle, Richard Lohrmann, in 1909. Lohrmann landscaped the Meadow Club and many prominent San Rafael homes. Karl was brought from Germany as a boy to be apprenticed to his uncle's work. In 1954 he purchased the nursery and implemented some of his own ideas, including being open on Sundays, advertising in the newspaper, and selling garden tools.
