John MacPhail Jr. (1932-1991)
Interview date: September 24, 1979
John MacPhail Jr. John, of Scottish descent, was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He tells the story of his family’s business, McPhail's, Inc., established in 1884 when John’s grandfather opened a livery stable in San Rafael and later sold wood, coal, heating oil, stoves, appliances, and building materials. Until 1979, McPhail’s was one of the largest companies in Northern California. John speaks with great pride of his family’s successful business.
