James, a long-time resident of Marin, is the son of a history Professor at Stanford, and was himself educated at Stanford and Harvard Universities. James was a WWI flyer and spent WWII in the Navy. He has been involved with the American Legion, and served as President of the local Boy Scouts, President of the Meadow Club, Chairman of "Save the Trains and Ferries," Trustee of the Katherine Branson School, and an editor of Old Marin With Love. He also lent his time in the Juvenile Court as a referee; in the Prison ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of California; and at the Marin County Historical Society.
