Born and raised in Salinas, Helen moved to Marin County with her husband, Carlo, in 1927. She began volunteering at Sunny Hills Children's Services in 1945. As she describes in her interview, the facility began as an orphanage in 1895 and evolved into a multi-location institute that provides help to adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems. To raise funds for Sunny Hills, Helen co-founded the Bargain Box, a successful thrift store in San Rafael. She utilized her experience with her husband's business, Standard Structures Inc., to manage the Bargain Box. Helen also volunteered at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, the San Rafael Improvement Club, and the Moya Library at the Marin Art and Garden Center.
