Frank is the oldest of nine children of Marin Waterhouse Pepper, and part of a fifth-generation Bolinas family. Frank’s grandfather, Frank Waterhouse, created the subdivision Grande Vista out of his 131-acre Bolinas farm in the 1880s, selling 50-foot lots for five hundred dollars each. Frank Waterhouse was also a banker and a promoter. Frank Pepper’s mother, Marin, had a tea room in Bolinas called La Casita de la Playa and authored the book Bolinas, a Narrative of the Days of the Dons. Frank’s grandmother, Nellie Waterhouse, planted hundreds of Monterey Cypress trees to beautify Bolinas. Frank speaks about his family, his early life in Bolinas, then his life at sea at sixteen, his service with the Army aboard an Army Hospital ship during World War II, and subsequent time in the Maritime Service.
