Ellen Redding McNeil (1899-1987)
Interview date: July 15, 1980
Ellen Redding McNeil Ellen, who was born in Nicasio (as was her mother, Ellen Murray Redding), was 81 at the time of this interview. She tells the story of the 560 acre “Redding Ranch” and describes the town and its square, locates and identifies the old stores, the hotel, houses, recalls her early schooling and classmates, and life on a dairy ranch. Ellen’s daughter, Martha, joins in the reminiscences. After attending Normal School in San Francisco, Ellen taught at the one-room schoolhouse on the Burdell Ranch where she traveled five miles each day by horseback.
