Catherine is the daughter of the lighthouse keeper at the Farallone Islands. Catherine lived
with her family on the islands from the time she was two weeks old until age 19. She describes
her life on the isolated island, her schooling, religious observances, holiday celebrations,
egg collecting, etc. She tells us that only once every three months did the mail and supply
boat visit the island. If an emergency occurred the residents built bonfires along the shore
and passing schooners would notify the lighthouse service to send a boat out.
