Minutes of August 14, 2002 Meeting

 

A.  The meeting was called to order by Vice President Shriebman at 10:08 a.m. at the library.  In attendance:  Annette Schriebman, Nancy Davis, Jerri Ceschi, Marguerite Gilbert, Kay Lowney, and Nancy Brooks. 

  1. No introductions were necessary.

 

  1. The minutes of the June 12, 2002 meeting were accepted as presented.

 

  1. There were no additions to the agenda.

 

B.     Friends Reading Garden Progress;  The wall is finished; the committee is very happy with the contractor.  It is a 70 day project completion is expected by mid October.  There are no penalties/bonuses for being late/early for completion.  Our $70,000 check was hand delivered by Annette to the County Auditor for the garden project.  Annette has the wording ready for the bench plaques; she will check with Library Administration about the correctness of the wording.

 

The groundbreaking had a large turnout.

 

Annette gave a garden report to the Joint Powers Authority Meeting on August 5.

 

  1. Tiles/Quotations:  Annette is researching cost of tiles with book quotations as a decoration on one wall.  These tiles would be in honor of Annette instead of a plaque.
  2. Dedication Plans –We need to make plans for the dedication.  Suggested that a Friday might be a good time for the dedication; tentatively October 18 or 25 if garden will be done.  Suggested speakers:  Supervisor Kinsey and Mayor Yang.  Annette checked with the director of the Town Band and they have a small group of musicians who might be available to play at our dedication party.

 

C.     Annual Meeting/Garden Dedication:  After discussion, it was decided that we would have an Annual Meeting separate from the Garden Dedication.

  1. Nominating Committee for Officers:  We will ask Jan Shaw and Joan Vaughan to serve with Nancy Davis on a Nominating Committee.

 

D.  Reports/Updates:

1.      County Reports:-  Nancy Brooks reported:  (1) The County Library Budget passed.  (2) The President of County FOL attended a children’s program at Novato and was very impressed with the quality of the puppeteer.  (3) The County FOL voted to allocate $45,350 for the Library’s Wish List; $23,000 now and rest in six months.  (4) Newsletter deadline for articles and pictures is September 20; mailing October 1 at Diane Rosenberger’s.  (5) I reported on CMA Garden groundbreaking.  (6) Marin City FOL will participate in the House Boat Tour on September 29; Freddy Cobey asked for volunteer hostesses.  (7) The Novato Children’s room renovation is underway.  (8) The FOL voted $100 to the CMA Garden to honor Herb Nienstedt and $125 2-line brick for Novato in memory of Diane Leland’s husband, Sherman Leland.  (9) Next meeting September 14; Nancy not here and asked either Annette or Jan to attend.  (10) The Book Shop has taken in $50,989 (averaging $7,000/month) through the first week in August.  They voted to install a 7-day programmable timer for the heater/air conditioner.  (11) M/s/c $250 seed money for San Geronimo to form a Friends group.

 

Nancy also reported that there was a very good response (16) to inserting the membership envelopes in the last newsletter.  She also sent 26 renewal letters in July and 3 in August.

 

2.      Treasurer – The Treasurer provided reports for the months of June and July and a Fiscal Year report (7/1/01 through 6/30/02).  (Copies in the Secretary’s file.)  We received our share of the Super Sale ($2,474) and Book Shop income for April, May and June ($442.54).  The Working Capital is $5,864.64 as of July 31, 2002.  We received $15,000 from the Corte Madera Beautification Committee and $15,000 from the Corte Madera Foundation for the Garden.  At Jerri’s request, it was m/s/c to transfer the CD into the checking account so funds will be available as needed.

 

3.      Foundation:  Kay Lowney reported that, as with our group, the Foundation needs more active members.  A solicitation letter was sent with the help of a professional mailing business.

 

4.      Used Book Store – Sue Bigall was not in attendance.  Nancy B. reported that Dorothy Saunders asked if Corte Madera would be interested in staffing the Book Shop on the 5th Thursdays which occurs 4 times a year.  We will discuss when Sue is in attendance; in the meantime, Nancy will call Sue to discuss and offer to staff it in the morning of August 29 with a friend.  Nancy will follow up with Dorothy.

 

5.      Branch Activities:  Nancy Davis suggested that we might want to consider co-chairs and meet every other month.  She reported: (1) she has scheduled a person from Dominican to lead a discussion of the Grapes of Wrath on October 10.  A stipend of $200 was requested.  Not enough people in attendance to make a decision if Friends will sponsor this program and pay the stipend.  She is working on getting local people to talk about the depression years at an October 17 program.(2)  Thirty teens signed up for the Young Adult program  The Teen Book Club did not work.  Circulation for YA’s is 75% higher  (3) An all time record of 800 signed up the children’s summer program  (4) The furnace is being replaced.  (5) The parking lot project passed the Corte Madera Planning Commission, the money has been committed and the project will go out to bid in January with construction to begin after the rainy season.

 

E.      Other Business:  There was no other business.
