Breastfeeding Research and Recommendations
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, formula is inferior to breastmilk and the breastfed infant is the reference against which all other feeding methods must be measured when assessing growth, health, and development. Formula fed babies may be at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome, diabetes, childhood obesity, and allergic diseases. Breastfeeding has also been associated with possible enhancement of cognitive development. (Source: American Academy of Pediatrics Work Group on Breastfeeding. 2005) The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months and breastfeeding with appropriate complimentary foods for at least 12 months of life and thereafter for as long as mutually desirable.
