Poll Worker Overview:
The Marin County Elections Department is continually seeking people dedicated to the democratic process who are able to serve in a polling place on election day.
Each election 700 or more people are selected to staff polling places where they are responsible for issuing ballots, assisting voters, and closing the polls after voting concludes at 8 p.m.
Election officers can earn from $100 for serving as a Clerk, to $125.00 for serving as a Deputy Inspector, to $150 for serving as a Chief Inspector. In general an officer should serve as Deputy Inspector before becoming a Chief Inspector. Those who have never worked at a polling place should read the following duties of these officers before making their selection on the poll worker application.
CHIEF INSPECTOR: Stipend $150 plus $20 for training Mandatory attendance at training class is required for training on voting procedures and to pick up supplies.
Responsibilities include:
• Coordinate with polling place for entry on Election Day.
• Oversee voting machines and coordinate overall running of
the polling place.
• Delivery of voted ballots and voting machine after the polls
close.
• Know ALL procedures and be available to assist where
needed.
DEPUTY INSPECTOR: Stipend $125 plus $20 for training Mandatory attendance at training class is required for training on voting procedures and to pick up supplies.
Responsibilities include:
• Coordinate with Clerks prior to Election Day.
• Oversee processing of voters.
• Organize breaks and tasks for the Clerks
• Balancing the ballots for the voting precinct.
CLERK: Stipend $100 plus $15 for optional training Responsibilities include:
• Assist Deputy and Chief Inspectors where needed.
• Must be at polling place by 6:30 AM and leave only when
directed by Inspector. (Approximately 9:00 PM)
