Library eBooks Collections

Accessing Our Collections
  • All of the public libraries in Marin County subscribe to these eBook collections, so you can access these eBooks either in the library (for the online-accessible collections) or from home/work/school with a valid card and PIN from one of Marin’s public libraries.
  • The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) subscribes to all of its eBook collections through Califa, a California library network. MCFL shares these collections with other libraries participating in Califa’s eBooks program. As such, for collections with download or “check-out” capabilities, if another patron anywhere in California checks a book out, you won’t be able to access it until it’s returned.
  • You can find all of these books either by going to the collection’s webpage directly from the links on our website (http://www.co.marin.ca.us/library/databases.cfm) or by searching in our catalog (http://marinet.lib.ca.us/). eBooks are labeled as such in the catalog and contain links out directly to the eBook.

Digital Books (aka Overdrive)
  • This collection includes thousands of titles in audio, Adobe, and/or MobiPocket format, many with multiple copies. The collection contains primarily bestsellers, travel books, romance, mystery, classics, language learning, teen and kids titles.
  • These titles cannot be read online; you must download them to a personal computer or laptop. You can also transfer the books to a PDA, portable audio player, or other portable device. The checkout period is three weeks.
  • Macintosh computers and iPods are not compatible with the audio books. There is currently no downloadable audio book product that is available to libraries that is compatible with Macintosh and iPods.
  • You cannot download these books onto library computers.

NetLibrary eBooks
  • This collection includes over 5,000 text eBooks in many subject areas, with an emphasis on fiction, business, consumer law (with printable forms), technology, and self-help.
  • Some eBooks can only be read online, whereas others are downloadable.
  • You do not need to create a NetLibrary account to search these titles.
  • In order to avoid getting "timed-out" please use our direct NetLibrary link, rather than our catalog to view/download these eBooks.

Safari Tech Books Online
  • This collection includes thousands of text eBooks on specific technology topics (database design, web design, various coding languages), including O’Reilly Press titles.
  • These eBooks can only be read online.
  • This program will time out after 10 minutes if you are reading a document. To prevent this, refresh the page you are reading or go to a different page and back again.

Virtual Reference Library
  • This collection includes several reference text eBooks: Arts and Humanities Through the Eras, Dictionary of American History, Gale Encyclopedia of Science, Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia, and West's Encyclopedia of American Law.
  • These eBooks can only be read online.
