COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AGENCY
Records Management
Assistant, Community
Development Agency, Planning. Do you have an eye for detail? Are
you good
at catching errors? Are you comfortable performing predictable tasks in
a quiet
environment where you get to set the pace? If so, the county
planning
department needs your skills to quality-check images of archived files
(documents, architectural and planning drawings) on the computer. Other
duties
include filing, sorting, preparing paper files for digital archiving,
imaging,
and copying. General knowledge of office systems and equipment
(copiers,
printers, and computers) would be helpful but is not required. Staff
will
provide training and supervision. Hours: 6-10 a week on a flexible
schedule.
Students seeking credit for community service are encouraged to apply.
MARIN CENTER, CULTURAL SERVICES
Maintenance Aide, Cultural Services. Learn to solve problems, fix things, and
build practical skills during a one-semester internship with the Marin
Center
Events Facilities Services team. Assist in all facilities services with
Marin
Center Events including but not limited to facilities maintenance,
electrical,
plumbing, key-locking, painting, and exhibits. The ideal candidate for
this
position has a can-do attitude, willingness to learn, interest in the
listed
skills, and the ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
HEALTH AND
HUMAN SERVICES
Bilingual Child
Engagement Internship, H&HS.
Make a difference in a child’s life by playing games, singing,
and reading
stories while parents attend skills class for new mothers with multiple
psycho-social stressors. The drop-in Circle of Women Support Group in San Rafael deals
with
themes such as healthy relationships, self-care, and setting
boundaries. Books,
puzzles, and other supplies provided. The ideal candidate is creative,
patient,
and has education or interest in counseling/psychology. The intern must
speak
Spanish and English, have experience with children ages 18 months to 5
years,
and be comfortable with groups of up to 10 children. Because of the
drop-in
nature of the group, the intern will be invited to participate in the
group if
no children happen to be present to engage. Schedule: Wednesdays from 9
to
11:30 a.m. Mandatory training in confidentiality and HIPAA will be
provided,
along with LIVESCAN fingerprinting and a TB test. Staff will orient the
intern to
the county’s Health and Wellness Campus in San Rafael. Commitment: one Wednesday
per
month (two or more dates per month preferred) for at least 6 months.
Cancer
Study Research Assistant, Marin
Women’s Study.
Be part of a regional collaborative study team with the potential
to
discover why breast cancer rates are high in Marin County.
The intern in this crucial position will help increase efficiency at
the Marin
Women's Study. Student must be very detail-oriented, able to work
systematically, and good at catching errors. Minimum time commitment is
6 hours
per week and the ideal would be 16-20 hours per week, weekdays except
Fridays.
Minimum length of internship: four months, with the possibility of an
extension.
Must be a self-starter and a good team member. Intern will help with
editing,
scanning surveys, preparing packets, phone calls, public contact, data
presentation, and literature reviews. Great opportunity for a student
interested in health, research, and health statistics. Desired:
familiarity
with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. All training, including
confidentiality
training, will be provided. Position will be supervised by professional
epidemiologist. Location: 20
N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael.
Regulatory
Assistant, Marin County Community
Mental Health. Expand your
knowledge of managed care and play a part in improving the system that
delivers
services to mentally ill adults. The intern will improve outcomes for
patients
by helping to ensure that Marin
County community
mental
health services comply with the law. Projects may include design of
programs to
expand access by Spanish-speaking clients and creation of a plan to
improve
services to “dual diagnosis” clients who suffer from both
mental illness and
substance abuse. The intern may get to help facilitate community forums
on
public services to children with MediCal. Knowledge of statistical
analysis is
required. The ideal intern is a social science graduate student or
undergraduate student who likes to manage data, conduct research,
analyze,
write, and coordinate committees. Familiarity with MediCal and
Spanish/English
bilingual skill are plusses. Position is not
clinical. Hours: 16 to 20 a week for 8 to 10 weeks. Staff will
provide a
systems-wide orientation to the department.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Newsletter Reporter, Civic Center Volunteers. Sharpen your
interviewing skills and see your byline in print as a profile writer
for the
Civic Center Volunteers monthly newsletter, Volunteer
View. The ideal intern is a superior writer and dependable person
who can
meet deadlines, use an in-house style guide, conduct interviews by
phone or in
person, and produce one lively, succinct profile each month that
reflects the
volunteer efforts and personality of the person interviewed. Required:
Knowledge of MS Word and standard English. Hours: 4 to 8 a month on a
flexible
schedule for the spring semester. Staff will provide orientation and
ongoing
support.
PARKS AND OPEN SPACE
Resource
Management and Open Space Intern, Parks
and Open Space. Learn about
managing the county’s 19,300 acres of parks and open space while
assisting with
meaningful projects alongside professional staff members in a busy
department.
Potential projects may include a vegetation and biodiversity management
plan, a
conservation easement stewardship initiative and a sustainability
initiative.
The ideal intern has excellent communication, research, and analytical
skills,
is a creative problem-solver, and enjoys working indoors and out.
Required:
undergraduate major or recent degree in natural resource management,
environmental planning, landscape architecture, or related field.
Hours: 32 a
week for 8 -12 weeks, starting in June. Small stipend available. Staff
will
orient the intern to the department.
SHERIFF
(Applicants are
subject to the Sheriff’s Office drug use guidelines and
are required to
pass a background investigation prior to appointment.)
Administration
Clerk, Sheriff’s Office.
Sharpen
your office management and bookkeeping skills in the Sheriff’s
Office. The
person in this position will interact with the public, make bank
deposits, move
mail to the Auditor’s Office, order office supplies, use Excel
and Access to
run query reports, maintain a storeroom, and perform basic research and
filing.
The ideal candidate is organized, people-oriented, efficient, and
dependable.
Sheriff’s Office staff will provide an introduction to the
department.
Crime Analysis
Assistant, Crime Analysis Unit.
Help
take a bite out of crime by supporting the Crime Analysis Unit of the
Sheriff’s
Office. Check criminal history of individuals pawning items, search for
matches
between pawned items and a list of stolen property, enter data into the
Records
Management System, update an Access database, prepare and mail surveys,
verify
addresses, file, and shred. The ideal candidate is accurate and can
maintain
confidentiality. Orientation provided by department staff.
Evidence Processing
Assistant, Investigations.
Help support
criminal investigations by researching property-related information for
cases,
taking inventory of property, and notifying owners when property is
available
for release. The person in this position also will physically move
property, do
basic filing, and answer phones. The ideal candidate has strong
customer
service skills and is attentive to detail. Staff will provide
orientation to
the investigations unit.
Jail Administrative
Assistant, Marin County Custody
Unit. Help keep the County
Jail
current with changing laws and regulations. Assist the Jail Facility
Regulatory
Compliance Officer with records, systems and equipment. The ideal
candidate is
organized and attentive to detail. The person in this position may be
asked to
complete research projects, help implement new regulations and
standards, set
up training meetings, and update documents. Orientation will be
provided by
staff. All Marin County
Sheriff's intern applicants are subject to a complete background
investigation
including a truth verification interview using voice stress analysis
(CVSA) or
polygraph.
Public Safety
Communications Center Intern, Sheriff’s
Office. Put your computer skills to work assisting in rewriting of
operational policies and procedures, and providing research to assist
with
development of training materials. Must be able to handle other
projects as
assigned. Training provided for general functions and requirements.
Technology Support
Assistant, Technology Services
Unit. Keep
law enforcement officers connected by cloning hard drives, maintaining
CPUs,
removing and repairing broken computer units, and updating software.
The ideal
candidate can diagnose and fix computer problems and is agile enough to
work in
the trunk or front seat of a patrol car when necessary. Orientation
provided by
Technology Services staff.
