INFORMATION ABOUT FLUORIDATION

What is fluoride?

  • Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral in water that helps make teeth stronger and better able to fight cavities.  It deters bacterial growth and improves the structure of tooth enamel to make it more resistant to decay.
  • Fluoride is found in many tooth products, such as toothpaste and fluoride rinses.  In addition, many city water supplies are fluoridated.

Are Marin County water systems fluoridated?

  • Marin County water is fluoridated in some communities, not all.  Novato and West Marin do not have fluoridated water. These communities have higher rates of tooth decay than other areas in Marin which are fluoridated If you reside in an area without fluoride, ask your physician or dentist about receiving fluoride supplements.

What is fluoride varnish?

  • Fluoride varnish is a simple, easily applied fluoride treatment that takes less than five minutes. Fluoride varnish is highly effective in preventing decay and can be safely used as soon as the first teeth have erupted.

Community Water Fluoridation

  • Water fluoridation is considered a major factor in the decline of tooth decay in the 20th century.  Fluoridation saves more money in prevented disease than it costs.

How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?

  • Have your dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child’s primary source of drinking water.  If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then your dentist may prescribe fluoride supplements
