General Assistance Cash Aid

General Assistance is administered by the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Employment and Training.

To apply for General Assistance which, if you are found eligible, provides cash aid to assist you until you are able to attain self-sufficiency, you must apply in person, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Your eligibility will be based on a number of factors, such as your income, property, assets and ability to be employed. The office is located at 20 North San Pedro Road, Suite 2022, across the street from Civic Center in San Rafael.

Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN)

The Greater Avenues for Independence Program, also known as GAIN, which assists recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children to reduce or eliminate their need for cash assistance through the provision of employment and training services which lead to permanent employment. The GAIN Program is located at 3301 Kerner Blvd., Suite 200A, in San Rafael. You may apply for participation in the GAIN Program by asking your AFDC Eligibility Worker for a referral or by calling (415) 507-4071 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.


Job Training Partnership Act

The Job Training Partnership Act program is administered by the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, and the Division of Employment and Training. To apply for Job Training Partnership Act, or JTPA services, which, if you are eligible, provide assistance with education, vocational training and job placement, please call (415) 257-3625, Monday through Friday, and ask to be scheduled for a METRO Orientation. JTPA eligibility will be based on a number of factors, such as income, employment history and job readiness.

Training Assessment Center

To obtain information about vocational assessment or vocational training services which are available in Marin County, please call (415) 257-3625, Monday through Friday, and ask to be scheduled for a METRO Orientation.

Youth Employment

To apply for youth employment services, available to eligible individuals age 21 and younger, please call (415) 507-4071 between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and ask to speak with a Youth Program Counselor.
