Monitoring the care of people in long-term residential care homes or nursing facilities is very important. Marin County does this through the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.
The Ombudsman staff are trained advocates who are authorized by State and Federal laws to visit nursing homes, residential care and assisted living facilities to ensure that quality care is given to residents and that they are being treated with dignity and respect. We are educated in the rights, issues and needs of long-term care facility residents and the state and federal regulations which govern those facilities.
How We Help
- Make regular, unannounced visits to licensed long-term care facilities and speak with residents. We ask about any concerns they may have and whether their needs are being met.
- Investigate and attempt to resolve any concerns or problems expressed by residents or on their behalf - no question or problem is too small to be important whether it be a complaint of cold food, unanswered call bells or outright neglect/abuse.
- Work to improve conditions in facilities that are brought to light by resident complaints or identified by Ombudsmen during their visits.
- Provide speakers to groups and organizations to assist in community education.
- Assist family members with information on availability and the cost of appropriate placement.
- Provide information to the public about skilled nursing facilities and board and care facilities. Download Choices for Living 2012.

Location: We are located at 10 North San Pedro Road, just south of the Civic Center.
