Tobacco prevention and cession services are designed to impact countywide smoking prevalence by decreasing illegal tobacco sales to minors by conducting countywide undercover decoy operations, providing merchant education, issuing citations to violating retailers and convening a countywide Tobacco Access Enforcement Task Force as well as increasing countywide smoking cessation services, with a special emphasis on underserved populations, and increasing the capacity of the health, behavioral health and social service agencies to identify, intervene and/or refer tobacco users in Marin County.

The Office serves as an administrative agency responsible for allocating state and local dollars to deliver tobacco education program services to Marin County residents. The Office contracts for these services with local community-based agencies and provides contract management and monitoring to insure delivery of quality services to the residents of Marin County. The Office also writes plans and coordinates local tobacco control services, collaborating closely with law enforcement, the County Office of Education, the Smoke Free Marin Coalition and other community groups. The Office is also responsible for providing educational enforcement and technical assistance on local, state and federal tobacco control ordinances and laws.

Bay Area Community Resources:
Provides quit smoking workshops, referrals and tobacco education services throughout Marin County. Consultation, training and technical assistance is available to agencies and staff who would like to assist their clients with quitting smoking. Other services include: cessation counseling for pregnant and parenting smokers, second hand smoke education, and a school-based intervention program. Kaiser Permanente:
New series starts every 6 weeks at Kaiser Permanente, San Rafael. Call (415) 444-2433 to register or call the Health Education Department at (415) 444-2173 for more information. Cost of the 9 sessions is $45.00 for Kaiser members and $90.00 for non-members. The class meets twice a week for the first three weeks and once a week for the remaining weeks. At the second session a pharmacist discusses nicotine replacement therapy.

St. Helena Hospital
HEALTH CENTER: This is a comprehensive 7 day, live-in program that includes, medical screening, lectures, counseling, regular light exercise and a wholesome vegetarian diet. Offered every 6 weeks, this program may be partially reimbursed by some health plans. Also offered are massage therapists, nutritionists and stress reduction techniques. Located in Napa County. Nicotine Anonymous:
This on-going support group meets every Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in San Rafael. (355 Los Ranchitos Road in Terra Linda across from Guide Dogs for the Blind). For more information call (415) 479-4541.

Telephone counseling is provided to all California residents free of charge. Thousands of Californians have quit smoking using this effective phone counseling program. This report details the strategies, challenges and successes of California Tobacco Control Program(CTCP). CTCP is an international public health model that has saved lives and transformed society by reducing adult smoking prevalence by 35%, from 22.7% in 1988 to 13.8% in 2007. In addition to discussing the successful work of the past 20 years the report also states that much work still lies ahead, new challenges with 4 million of California residents still smoking.
