Breast Cancer Program and Breast Cancer Research
Research
July 2005 - Marin Women’s Study Launch.
Based on Research Advisory Group recommendations, MCDHHS launches
research project to continue the current investigation into the
high rates of breast cancer in Marin.
February 2005 – The MCDHHS Breast Cancer
Research Advisory Group met for the second time to provide recommendations
for the direction of the County’s Breast Cancer Research
program. The Advisory Group members were all strongly in agreement
that individual-level data be collected with the next cycle of
funding. They felt that it is time to test the hypotheses that
have been generated through ecological analysis that have been
conducted by MCDHHS, Community Epidemiology and by outside researchers.
The necessity to further past research was emphasized by the advisory
committee.
October 2003 - MCDHHS (in collaboration with
UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, Buck Institute for Aging and Marin
Breast Cancer Watch) selected to form the Marin County/Bay Area
Breast Cancer & the Environment Research Center. Marin County/Bay
Area Center will be the Coordinating Center for the four Centers
of Excellence.
September 2003 -
County of Marin DHHS was awarded $482,396 for breast cancer research
in Marin County for September 2003 – August 2005.
September 2002 - Breast Cancer Research Advisory
Committee convened to develop recommendations for research projects
and activities that will give Marin County a better understanding
of why the rates of breast cancer are so high.
November 2001 - Marin Breast Cancer Research
Collaborative launched. Partners include Marin County Health and
Human Services, University of California at Berkeley, University
of California at San Francisco, Marin Breast Cancer Watch and
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.

July 2003 - Marin Health Updates Newsletter
published: 1) Breast Cancer Risk Factors in Marin County Women,
2001; 2) Breast Cancer Screening in Marin County Women, 2001.
June 2003 - Marin County HHS releases recommendations
to reduce breast cancer risk and promote increased health and
wellness. Recommendations printed in the Marin County Independent
Journal.
May 2003 - Epidemiology Program produces Breast
Cancer What's Happening in Marin? A Compilation of Breast Cancer
Research in Marin County from April 2001 - May 2003
July 2001 - First "Report on Breast Cancer
in Marin County" released.
Community Initiatives
September 2003 - Marin County Health Department
grants $44,000 to fund five local breast cancer organizations
and projects through the Andrea Fox Fund.
October 2001 & 2002 - Beyond Breast Cancer
Awareness Month Gala Receptions hosted. Marin County Board of
Supervisors and the Breast Cancer Coordinating Council honor the
many dedicated groups and projects involved in breast cancer in
the county.
June 2005 - Women’s Health Community
Forum: Senator Carole Migden and Marin County Department of Health
& Human Services hosted a community forum to provide an overview
and facilitate a discussion of problems and steps towards solutions
in women’s health in Marin County.
March 2005 - Campaign for Safe Cosmetics-Marin.
The Marin Cancer Project is spearheading a coalition of public
health, educational, faith, labor, women's, environmental justice,
environmental and consumer groups. Their goal is to protect the
health of consumers and workers with special focus on teens by
requiring that the body care products industry phase out the use
of chemicals that are known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens,
and reproductive toxins.
February 2005 - the Marin County Board of
Supervisors approved the second round for Andrea Fox Fund totaling
$40,000 to help support six local organizations and projects in
their efforts to help people of Marin struggling with breast cancer.
September 2004 - Dr. Larry Meredith, Director, Marin County Department
of Health & Human Services secured an agreement to continue
Mobile Mammography Van service to Marin under ownership of San
Francisco General Hospital. The Van will then provide Mobile Mammography
service directly to underserved areas in Marin County.
Funding
Since October 2000 the County has received
$1,838,557.00 to fund Marin County Breast Cancer Research Projects.
