Photo of administrative
vehicle Administrative vehicles provide transportation for the Chief Officers, Forester, Fire Marshal, and Fire Captain Specialist. They provide room for fire fighting gear as well as room for specialized gear such as fire investigation kits, mapping computers and vegetation management tools. They also provide a means for rapid response to emergencies.

Photo of utility vehicle Utility vehicles comes in an assortment of makes and models. Most of them are 1/2 ton pickups used to run errands or to transport fire fighters to overhead assignments to other parts of the state. For example, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection may request a Safety Officer for a fire in the Tehama-Glenn Ranger Unit. Marin County could provide this resource and a utility vehicle for transportation.

Photo of advanced life support vehicle Marin County provides Advance Life Support in the areas of Woodacre, Pt. Reyes Station, Tomales, and to the community of Ross through contract. Paramedics utilize rescue units to quickly respond to emergencies including heart attacks, difficulty breathing, traffic accidents, and more! The rescue units carry the paramedic equipment, rope rescue gear, rapid entry kits, and mass casualty kits.

Photo of type 3 fire engine Marin County's type III fire engines provide the best in wildland fire protection! They carry 500 gallons of water and 30 gallons of wildland firefighting foam. The standard compliment includes 500 feet of 3 inch, 1200 feet of 1 1/2 inch, and 800 feet of 1 inch hose. The engines have the ability to pump 500 gallons per minute while driving or stationary. Cruise control makes the long distance driving more comfortable (Marin County provides mutual aid throughout the entire state).

Photo of type 1 fire engine Type I fire engines provide numerous tools for the fire fighter. It has the ability to pump 1250 gallons of water per minute. It carries 1000 feet of 4 inch hose, 600 feet of 3 inch hose, and several hundred feet of 2 1/2 and 1 3/4 inch hose. They carry self contained breathing apparatus for breathing air within a burning building or hazardous material release. They also carry specialized equipment based on the area they serve. This equipment includes the Jaws of Life, Paramedic gear, air bags for lifting very heavy objects and more.

Photo of water tender With the remote nature of the areas we serve, fire hydrants are often nonexistent. Water tenders are used to haul water to this areas and augment water supply in areas with hydrants. Marin County water tenders vary in size from 1500 to 3000 gallon capacity.

Photo of dozer Marin County Fire Department utilizes state of the art heavy equipment as part of their wildland fire arsenal. A Caterpillar D-5H with an environmental cab can quickly build containment lines around fires while providing safety and comfort to the 3 full time fire heavy equipment operators. The operators maintain fire roads during the winter and early spring months as well as provide additional staffing for emergency response.

Photo of heavy rescue vehicle In the event of a major disaster such as an earthquake or bridge collapse, heavy rescue equipment is needed quickly. With the potential of a bridge or building collapse, Marin County could become isolated quickly. Heavy rescue units were built for this exact scenario that can provide urban search and rescue capabilities. Rescue equipment includes a boom capable of lifting heavy loads. Other equipment carried on a urban search and rescue vehicle include: Cribbing, exothermic torch, chainsaws, cutoff saws, jack hammer, core drillers, search cameras, listening devices, gas detection devices, confined space search equipment, rope rescue gear, building jacks, heavy lifting air bags, air knife, Jaws of Life, and more

Photo of watercraft With the large amounts of coastal area, lakes, and levee systems, water rescues are a potential threat to both citizens and visitors alike. The Marin County USAR team uses one rigid-hull inflatable rescue boat, two personal watercrafts, and other technical rescue equipment.
