The Natural Systems Element
The Natural Systems Element focuses on the natural resources
that sustain life. Topics covered include:
Native species and habitats (biotic
resources), including stream and creek waters and shorelines, wetlands,
marine habitats, grasslands, and oak woodlands, biodiversity, natural communities, and sensitive resources. 
Water resources, including
watersheds, hydrology, flood plains, water supply, and water quality.
Geologic and soil resources, including
geological formations and soil types and their characteristics.
Atmosphere and climate, including
air quality and global warming.
The bayfront conservation area: specific
policies for the shoreline and diked baylands along San Pablo, San Francisco,
and Richardson Bays.
Open space, including scenic
resources and areas designated for conservation or preservation as public
open space land.
Agriculture, including policies
to preserve agricultural land and agricultural production and to provide
a diverse local food supply.
