In 1999, the Marin County Board of Supervisors approved a set of recommendations that committed the County to undertake actions such as using sustainability as the foundation of the Countywide Plan update and monitoring and reporting on internal County operations.
“Fossil Free by 2033?” explores seven different strategies: energy efficiency and conservation, solar energy, wind energy, ocean energy, emerging vehicle technologies, waste to energy, and utility-generated renewables. The report suggests that these technologies could be used and developed to increasingly provide for Marin County’s energy, gas and vehicle fuel needs.
While there are many opportunities to make progress toward the “Fossil Free by 2033 vision” it is unlikely that the goal will be met in full, - although Marin could become “carbon-neutral’ through the use of renewable resources and the purchase of “green tags” or other offsets for energy, gas and vehicle fuel uses. The seven strategies outlined in the “Fossil Free by 2033?” report have been directly linked to implementation programs in the draft Countywide Plan (CWP) which will help Marin make progress towards the goal in the near term.
