The San Quentin Reuse Planning Committee recently completed their reuse recommendations for San Quentin prison site. The charge of the committee was to evaluate various opportunities and constraints on the site and bring forth land use recommendations for inclusion into the Countywide Plan update process. As the Marin Countywide Plan is currently being updated, the Committee recommendations will be included in the Update. The State Auditor recently began their cost-benefit analysis of continuing operation of the site as a prison. Their report is due to be completed by April 2004.
The site is located near the two major highways in Marin and includes shoreline frontage, undisturbed ridge areas, and a number of historic structures. This location provides a rare opportunity to address many of the needs of the community, such as linking transportation to housing, while respecting the adjacent neighborhood of San Quentin Village and the environmental qualities of the site. Land use designations on the site do not reflect current conditions and have not been evaluated in a long time. For more details about the process, see the links below.

The State Department of General Services completed a report in 2001 which analyzed potential reuse scenarios of the San Quentin prison site and the relocation of the existing facility and programs. The three scenarios in the report are not intended to be recommended land use alternatives but rather provide data and background analysis for the site.
