Marin Supervisor Charles McGlashan

January 2005 Newsletter

News From Supervisor Charles McGlashan

Welcome to my newsletter! This page, which will be updated regularly, will keep you current with the work I am doing on your behalf. I hope you will find it informative.

This first newsletter will spotlight comments I made at my swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, January 4, 2005. It was a seminal event in my personal and professional life and underlined my commitment to you as my constituents.

The ceremony took place in the Board of Supervisors' Chambers at our beautiful Marin County Civic Center. My wife, Carol Misseldine, held two books on which I took the oath: one was the same Bible used for my great Grandfather's swearing-in to the State Assembly in 1895 and the second was Marty Griffin's book, Saving the Marin and Sonoma Coast. Annette Rose, my predecessor as Supervisor for southern Marin, administered the oath of office. The Marin Men's Chorus sang two wonderful tunes at the event.

The following are the comments I made to those assembled:

"If I am successful over the next decade in working with this already incredible Board of Supervisors, Marin County will be a model for sustainability. This will involve work on all three "E's" that comprise the real concept of sustainability.

Equity:

  • Affordable Housing in live/work locations

  • Better School-to-Work Opportunities

  • Even better healthcare and community centers
  • Economy:

  • Our targeted businesses in green services, health sciences and organic products that can flourish within our strict land use rules, preserving our village life
  • Environment:

The field in which all other issues rely

  • Strict preservation of the natural resources that have made Marin truly great and wealthy
  • Better transit and energy efficiency will help us reduce our footprint on the earth
  • In concluding my comments, I read the following quote by one of my personal heroes, Paul David Wellstone, the late Senator from Minnesota.

"The future will not belong to those who are content with the present. The future will not belong to the cynics. The future will not belong to those who stand on the sidelines. The future will belong to those who are willing to work hard for what they believe in. The future will belong to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

As the ceremony ended the Marin Men's Chorus raised their joyful voices and, with wit and whimsy, sang "Consider Yourself at Home, Consider Yourself part of the Family…" Thanks to the support of my colleagues, county staff, and the many constituents I have met already, I do indeed 'consider myself at home' and look forward to each day on the job.

    Future Work will include:

  • Creating Marin's Transit District for our local shuttles
  • Investigating the economic and environmental implications of rail service in Sonoma and Marin
  • Investigation of the Alto Tunnel for bikes
  • Increasing affordable housing
  • Dedication of Old St. Hilary's open space
  • Focus on the Marin City Community Center
