The index to documents recorded prior to 1973 may be viewed in our office located in the Marin Civic Center, Room 232.

Indexing change effective January 1, 2010
Beginning January 1, 2010, the Marin County Recorder's Office will not abbreviate any word written into the Grantor/Grantee index.
All words will appear in the index as written on the recorded document. If the document contains an abbreviation, the index will contain the same abbreviation. This change also applies to the middle names of individuals which were previously truncated to initials. This change does not affect documents indexed prior to January 1, 2010.
Official Records are indexed by name only - you cannot search by property address or assessor parcel number (APN).
When entering last names of individuals, please use the following guidelines:
O'Connor is entered as O CONNOR
Mc Donald is entered as MC DONALD
MacDonald is entered as MAC DONALD
Macdonald is entered as MACDONALD
Hyphenated names (i.e. SMITH-JONES) should be entered with the hyphen.
Company names should be entered in the "Last Name" box (i.e. MC DONALDS CORP)
Company names containing "and" should be entered with an ampersand ("&"):
Smart and Final is entered as SMART & FINAL
Entries are not case sensitive.
To search by document number, enter the 4-digit year followed by the document number in the following format:

In compliance with CA Government Code Section 6254.21, the Marin County Recorder does not make images of official records available on the internet. Document images may be viewed and/or purchased at our office.
Copies of official records may be ordered by mail. Copy fees are $4.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page (plus an additional $4.00 per document if a certified copy is desired). Your copy order must include the specific instrument number(s) requested; copy fee (check or money order payable to “Marin County Recorder”); your mailing address; and a daytime telephone number. Please note: For documents recorded prior to May 1, 1998 the number of pages shown on the Document Detail Page may be incorrect.
